Under the command of Lieutenant Freiherr v. Berckheim, CO of U 26, the Russian cruiser “Pallada” was drilled into the ground on 11th Oct. 1914

Umstehend eine Ansicht von Großadmiral v. Tirpitz, welcher jetzt seinen Abschied eingereicht hat. Er hat sich um den Aufbau der Marine große Verdienste erworben. Weshalb er gegangen ist weiß man nicht genau. Sein Nachfolger wird wohl Admiral von Capelle werden. – In einer engl.(ischen) Zeitung wird auf den Rückzug der Franzosen aus Verdun vorbereitet. Overleaf is a picture of Fleet Admiral v. Tirpitz, who put in his resignation. He gained great merits for the construction of our Navy. Nobody knows why he resigned. His successor will probably be Admiral v. Capelle. – An English newspaper prepares for the retreat of the French from Verdun. With many affectionate greetings I am your truthful Ernst

Im jetzigen Kriege ist es schon mehrmals vorgekommen, dass der Vater seinem eigenen Sohn den militärischen Gruß erweisen musste, etwas ähnliches stellt auch umstehendes Bild dar. – Jetzt soll ja auch die Civildienstpflicht (old grammar) eingeführt werden, hoffentlich entstehen dadurch keine Scherereien. – Sei vielmals herzlich gegrüßt von Deinem treuen Ernst.

In this war it has happened quite a few times that a father had to salute his own son. something similar is pictured overleaf. (the caption is in a North German dialect, the father says “Let’s hope I get that military salute correct). #3 It is, actually, an understatement to say that Admiral von Tirpitz had “great merits” concerning the construction of the German navy. In truth, he was the originator of the idea to build such a navy (including all political disadvantages stemming from the “building race” with Great Britain)and the untiring architect and all-encompassing agent of its construction.
Ernst´s mentioning of the French retreat from Verdun is wishful thinking; the French were prepared for a defence of Verdun at all costs.

#4 – The question whether the Zeppelin was a “very effective weapon” against England is debatable. The Zeppelin raids caused comparable little damage and more anger against Germany than disruption of normal life, suffering quite a number of losses themselves for their efforts.
