    1. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 1.6.15

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 01.06.15
The picture overleaf shows you the power of a sea-mine. But it is not a large one. This evening I’ll go to gymnastics again. Received a letter from Amelie today. I mail the letter for you right away. Hope you will receive it. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst

    2. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 2.11.15

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 02.11.15
Du you like the poem overleaf? I like it very much. I am still very sorry that so many men were lost at the Falkland Islands. Now, my dear Lotte, many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst

    3. Liebes Fräulein! St.-Gr. (Stettin – Grünhof?) den 1.12.13
(this is prewar and Ernst uses a very formal way of addressing Lotte, he uses the formal “Sie” – form instead of the more intimate “Du”, something that can not be translated into English, caption for this and following cards see translation )

    Dear Miss! St.-Gr., 01.12.13
How did you like the afternoon – coffee? (“Kränzchen” is an old word referring to two or more people having coffee, cake and small-talk) I hope you did not catch the cold as per your prophecy. I can sleep like a bear momentarily and will hit the sack right away, otherwise I am still very fine. With many affectionate greetings I am your devoted Ernst Franke

Many thanks for your little card. Am coming from the gymnastics floor. Cool, it’s 1:30 pm, but that’s not a problem. So, it’s Sunday afternoon, at 3 pm I will be at your place. Plan is to have coffee at the zoo. The English words mean: “AM sending greetings with thanks”. Till Sunday then, many dear greetings from your devoted Ernst Franke.

    8. Liebes Fräulein! St. – Gr., d. 7.12.13
Mich Ihrer Huld anheim stellend grüßt Sie vielmals Ihr Ihnen ganz erg.(ebener) Ernst Franke

Dear Miss! St. – Gr. 07.12.13
A hot thank you for your dear little card. I was looking for you in town like a lynx but you remained a “fata morgana”. I prefer to concentrate my happy thoughts on you just to rob you of any chance to growl. I put myself completely into your hands and send affectionate greetings as your devoted Ernst Franke

Cards No. 3 – 8 are pure romance! He was really trying hard to date and please „Fräulein Lotte“, but it is nearly impossible to catch all the “love-talk” in a translation

    SET 46

#2 – The picture shows the last moments of either cruiser “Leipzig” or cruiser “Nürnberg” in the battle at the Falklands on December 8, 1914. For both ships it was allegedly reported that a man or a group of men stood on the sinking wreck holding the flag of the Imperial navy into the air. The “many men lost” Ernst mentioned were from the armoured cruisers “Scharnhorst”(860 dead) and “Gneisenau” (592 dead) and the small cruisers “Nürnberg” (327 dead) and “Leipzig” (315 dead). See Set 22 #6, as well
