    Dear Lotte! Friedrichsort, 14.06.17
Hopefully the card reaches you there. – Your cousin’s wife think it’s appropriate if you could bring some civil cloths, that would give you a better chance to see everything over here. But that is completely up to you. Good bye, my dear. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst

    Dear Lotte! Friedrichsort, 12.06.17
Many thanks for your dear letter, I was very delighted. There is no need to change trains at Lübeck. The trains runs straight from Berlin to Kiel. I will visit your cousin again today. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst

    Dear Lotte! Friedrichsort, 08.06.17
In the west another battle has started between the English and the Germans. The English want to break through at all costs. The Italian attack at the Isonzo has been bloodily repelled. I think the Russians are not capable of any serous offensive any more, although their western allies are really demanding it. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst

#3 The “another battle in the West” refers to the very successful British attack on the German-held ridge at Messines on June 7, 1917. Its main feature was the under-mining of the German trenches with 500 tons of high explosives. The detonation could be heard in Great Britain, more than 200 kilometres away.

“The Italian attack at the Isonzo” refers to the tenth (May 12 to June 5, 1917) of eleven bloody border battles in which the Italian army made very little progress against the Austro-Hungarian troops, but lost many men.

    Greetings, Urs
