Kannst Du dort nicht weißes und schwarzes Nähgarn bekommen? Meine Schwester Johanna schrieb mir sie hätte nichts mehr und könnte dort keins bekommen, ich solle doch mal hier Ausschau halten. In Kiel ist jedoch auch nichts aufzutreiben. Dein lieber Brief erfreute mich sehr. Sei vielmals herzlich gegrüßt und innig geküsst von Deinem treuen Ernst.

Can you obtain white and black thread there? My sister Johanna wrote that she does not have it any more and can’t obtain anything there, I was supposed to look for it. Heute war ich wieder bei Hans und Leni und habe ihnen wieder ein Päckchen Kaffee-Ersatz gebracht. – Sie haben heute ihre Gänse verkauft und zwar für 30,00 M(ark) das Stück. Da hat sich die Mühe der Aufzucht wohl gelohnt, nicht wahr? Die G(änse) waren gerade 10 Wochen alt. – Sei herzlichst gegrüßt u(nd) geküsst v(on) D(einem) tr(euen) Ernst.

Today was at Hans’ and Leni’s place again and brought a pack of ersatz – coffee. – Today they sold their geese for 30,- Marks a piece. So it was profitable to breed them, wasn’t it? The geese were just 10 weeks old. Many affectionate greetings and kisses from your truthful Ernst

Heute erhielt ich vom Vater die Nachricht, dass mein Großvater in Krefeld gestorben sei und er, falls er Urlaub erhält, morgen (Sonnabend) zu seiner Beerdigung fahren wird. – In Trauer um meinen lieben Großvater grüßt Dich vielmals Dein treuer Ernst.

Today I received news from my father that my grandfather in Krefeld has died and that he will travel to the funeral if he gets leave. Mourning for my dear grandfather I am sending affectionate greetings, your truthful Ernst

Heute erhielt ich von Ferdinand eine Karte. Er ist bei (illegible) (Galizien) an beiden Unterschenkeln verwundet worden und liegt nun in Merseburg im Lazarett, nachdem er vorerst kurze Zeit in einem Lemberger Lazarett gelegen hat. Today I received a card from Ferdinand. He has been wounded in both lower legs at (?) in Galicia and is not at the military hospital at Merseburg after recovering for a short while at the military hospital at Lemberg. Many affectionate greetings and kisses from your truthful Ernst

This his mother’s father, Ludwig Wimmer (maybe Wymer), who lived to 84. Sadly, his own father passed away the very next month. He was only 58.
