Many thanks for your loving card-letter dating 21st of this month. I also think that is very nice of your landlord, that he gave you the rose. I hope the pedicle has enough life so that it gets through the winter. Have you received my picture? Many affectionate greetings from your truthful loving Ernst. Many greetings to your dear relatives. The card are often referring to things that must have been written in a letter, so it is not always clear what he is referring to. Also it is interesting to see that many cards have been written with a very clear handwriting, some have been scribbled in a hurry. There are many repetitions and sometimes the old German writing is hard to translate. I tried to find the right words, but can’t get all the puns and plays on words into English. Anyway, these cards are a great source on the feelings of “ordinary” people in WW I, quite different from the official publications.

Regarding card #1, Kiel, den 12.8.15
The German Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) and minelayer “Meteor” had layed minefields off the Russian shore in the Arctic during the Spring of 1915.
In August 1915, it conducted a minelaying mission against the eastern coast of Scotland and, during it´s return, sank the British AMC “The Ramsay”. This success led to a pursuit by British warships which found “Meteor” on August, 9. Surrounded by five ships, Captain von Knorr decided not to fight (and sacrifice his crew unneccessarily), but scuttled his ship and went with his crew into captivity.
Greetings, Urs
