  1. SET 21

(wrong spelling, must be „wahr“) Es macht doch den Verteidigern der Dardanellen alle Ehre.

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 20.03.15
Again, two English armoured cruisers have been drilled into the bottom, also a French one, that is very delightful, isn’t it?. That is a lot of honour for the defenders of the Dardanelles. How our enemies must be mad about the high over-subscription of the war-bonds. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful loving Ernst.

    2. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 23.4.15

Many thanks for your dear card-letter from the 20th of this month. I received the gymnastics-dress on time on Tuesday evening and therefore could participate in gymnastics. Fee is 1 Mark per month and the locker-fee is 2 Marks per year. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful loving Ernst.

    3. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 15.4.5 (he must mean 15)
Ostertag tatsächlich meine neuen Salamander an. . Es grüßt Dich vielmals herzlich Dein treuer Ernst.

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 15.04.15
I received your loving card dating 11th of this month with many thanks. Where exactly is the “Schmetterlingsmühle”? (lit: “Butterfly-mill”; must be some landmark or restaurant) I am delighted that you had such a good time. On the second day of Easter I actually wore my new Salamanders (German shoe brand). On your way back were your shoes soaked, too?. Please send me my short gymnastics-trousers, shirt, long socks, belt and shoes. I would like to do some gymnastics here. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst.

    4. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 10.5.15

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 10.05.15
While taking a walk at Düsternbrook yesterday I met an old friend who was on “Gneisenau” with me and is now stationed on “Prinzregent Luitpold”. We were very delighted by the reunion and together we continued the walk to the hangar of the dirigibles. Weather was good, a little chilly in the evening. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful loving Ernst.

    5. Liebe Lotte!
(must be the local gymnastics club).

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 23.07.15
Has your sister received any news from the Vulcan yet? To my mind it takes quite long. Today I’ll have gymnastics again. In our club there is a man from Stettin from Korporation. Are there still wounded in the school at Langestrasse? How are you, my dear? Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst.

    6. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 30.6.15
„Frostkönig“ (probably a book or theater play) ist mir unbekannt, doch dem (illegible) sehr gut. Sei vielmals herzlich gegrüßt von Deinem treuen Ernst.

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 30.06.15
Many thanks for your dear card-letter and card, I was very delighted. I also was very delighted that there was a lot of rain, from nearly everywhere in Germany we receive the good news, let’s thank God for his gift. I was surprised, too, by the mount of mail you received and am happy with you. I do not know ”Frostkönig”, but is …. very good. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst.

Deinen herzlichen Gruß u(nd) K(uß) erwiedernd (grammatically incorrect, should be „erwidernd“) bin ich Dein Dich treu liebender Ernst.

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 10.04.15

    8. Liebe Lotte! Kiel, d. 9.4.15

    Dear Lotte! Kiel, 09.04.15
I was very delighted by your loving card. At first I thought that you have been sitting on the porch until 5 am and watching the sunrise, because you write: 5 o’clock, it’s getting lighter now”. But soon I learned better. Hopefully you reached home dry. Many affectionate greetings from your truthful Ernst. Many heartily greetings to your dear relatives.

  2. Re card #1, Kiel, d.20.3.15 (originally written as 20.9.15)

As I mentioned before, the correct datum should be March, 20.

[ADMIN: Date corrected in original comment]

On March, 18, 1915 an Allied fleet of 16 British and French battleships entered the Dardanelles to shell Osmanian gun positions and to enable the own minesweepers to proceed with their work. After a “first run”, the French battleship “Bouvet” and, shortly afterwards, the British battleships “Irresistible” and “Ocean” hit mines that had been laid just the previous night and sank with heavy loss of life. Two more French battleships, “Gaulois” and “Suffren”, and the British battle cruiser “Inflexible” were damaged.

    Greetings, Urs
